Our “Berklee Bastard” (who has yet to meet “Daddy”), Justin Helland, was born in San Diego and showed a passion for music from a young age. Beginning with rock guitar at age 11, he later studied classical and jazz guitar for five years with William Wilson and Peter Pupping.
In 2006 he attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston where he completed a bachelors degree in Music Performance. At Berklee he discovered a deep interest and love for Brazilian music, as well as getting the opportunity to study under and collaborate with musicians from all over the world. He has since been involved with projects involving Latin jazz, Irish/Celtic music, Classical ensembles, and songwriters.
One of Justin’s fondest childhood memories is of his Irish grandfather singing humorous folk songs during his visits, as well as the many Irish and American folk songs that his mother would sing while playing guitar.
Justin began to learn Irish music after being inspired by hearing Paul Castellanos leading a traditional Irish session at the local pub where Ned and Brehon Law used to play (before his time). “That’s right Paul. It’s your fault I’m into this Irish thing.” 😉
When Justin isn’t performing with the boys, he is often found swooning the women with his magic guitar skills at the local wineries. Find out where all he plays at: www.justinhelland.com.
