Our “Ould Bastard”, Len’s ancestry line runs to the West Cork region near Dunmanway, Ireland and of the Capen’s of England. Also, his Grandmothers side of the family is linked to the Leonard’s of County Cork, Ireland, who left for America during the great potato famine.
Len met and befriended Ned and his wife Brenda shortly after they opened Tom Giblin’s Irish Pub in Carlsbad village in the late 90’s and then traveled to Ireland with them in February of 2000. While on that trip, they spent a day in Roundstone (where ‘The Matchmaker’ was filmed) and picked up his first Bodhran, “on a whim.” Ned’s first lesson, “In order to play it you need to learn to pronounce it.”
After returning home, Len would get up and play a bit about 6 months after buying the drum, but his first time playing a full set with Ned was at the old Del Mar Renaissance Faire. He was a regular with the band from that day on.
